Wayne Levi sank seven birdies en route to a 5-under-par 67yesterday that gave him the second-round lead of the $600,000 HoustonOpen, with 13 golfers within two strokes.
Levi held a one-shot lead at 7-under 137 over six competitors -first-round co-leader Dave Barr, Jay Haas, Dan Forsman, Aki Ohmachi,Payne Stewart and Jack Renner.
Seven golfers were at 139, including Masters champion LarryMize. Ed Fiori, who shared the first-round lead with Barr, was threeshots back following a 74.
LEGENDS: Miller Barber and Bob Charles combined for a best-ball62, an 8-under-par effort that gave them a 5-shot lead after thesecond round of the Legends of Golf tournament in Austin, Texas.
Barber and Charles reached the halfway point of the tournamentfor senior players 50 and over with a 36-hole total of 123, 17 underpar.
While they held the lead in the tournament that offers $500,000in total prizes with $120,000 to the winning team, they were upstagedby some even older players, Jerry Barber, 70, and Doug Ford, 64.
Barber and Ford birdied the first five holes they played andfinished with a 9-under-par 61, within one shot of the tournamentrecord.
DUNLOP: Isao Aoki fired a 67 to take a three-shot lead in the$345,000 tournament at Ina, Japan.
Tsuneyuki Nakajima carded an eagle on the 508-yard, par-5 15thhole on the way to a bogey-free 68 and a 139 total.
David Ishii of the United States, Australian Terry Gale and fourJapanese players stood at 140.
CEPSA: Ian Woosnam of Britain fired a second straight 5-under-par67 to gain the halfway lead in a $250,000 tourney at Madrid, Spain.
Woosnam carded six birdies to finish at 10-under 134. Two shotsoff the lead were Spain's Severiano Ballesteros, who shot a 67, andGordon J. Brand of Britain, who shot a 68.
